Labyrinth for Reflection & Community at Lyle Simmons House
For those moments of quiet reflection, explore the labyrinth on our property, a serene oasis for contemplation and enjoyment. The labyrinth at the Historic Lyle Simmons House is a peaceful, meditative space designed for reflection, healing, and honoring memories. Restored with the help of community members, each river stone in its path holds meaning - some marked with names in tribute or remembrance. Unlike a maze, the labyrinth offers a single, winding path inward and back out, encouraging a calm, mindful walk.
Open to the public daily during daylight hours, it’s a place for quiet contemplation and connection. Visitors are asked to respect its sanctity, remembering it is a space for reflection, not play. Here, the labyrinth serves not only as a symbol of the property’s history but also as a gift of community care.
History of the Lyle Simmons House and Calvert Homestead
In 1980, Rob achieved his dream of owning a “handyman special” with a bit of land when he purchased an old 1920 farmhouse that had been standing empty for over 20 years, along with property whose history stretched back to the 1800s. He and his then-girlfriend, Barbara, began their greatest adventure—breathing new life into the neglected home and making it their own.
Over the next 11 years, the couple lovingly restored the house while building a new way of life. They started a flower and herb business, and Rob crafted handmade brooms and other artisan items. Their shared dream became a lifestyle, and in the midst of renovations, they were married on the front porch surrounded by family, friends, and neighbors.
Rob believed deeply in leaving a place better than you found it, a value Barbara continues to honor more than 45 years later. The land has always been a place of peace and tranquility for all who visit. Like the old farmhouse, the property’s labyrinth, originally built in 2001, has recently been restored with the help of Hospice of the Chesapeake, offering a quiet place for anyone seeking reflection and healing.
